Food

When you bring your puppy home at eight weeks, you can feed her three or more times a day. It is important that the puppy get all the nutrients she needs for proper development. Any high-quality puppy chow should be sufficient.

We typically recommend Purina Pro Plan – Focus Puppy: Lamb or Chicken. Typically by the time the puppy leaves for his or her forever home they are eating approximately 11/4c-11/2c per feeding or twice a day.

Crate

We recommend getting a large 42” crate with a divider for your new puppy. You will want to limit the size of the crate when the puppy is small in order to help with potty training. As the puppy grows, you can remove the dividers. This keeps from having to buy new crates.

Exercise Pen

An exercise pen is a great way to keep the puppy contained while he is learning the ropes. It keeps the furniture and carpet ‘safe’ while also keeping the puppy safe and letting him have more freedom than the crate allows. This is also a great way to let him interact with the family without being overwhelmed and is recommended if you know you are not going to be able to keep a close eye on him for a while.

Age Appropriate Toys

You will need several of these. Good, age appropriate toys are important for proper development and exercise. They will help the puppy through teething and help develop the bond between you and your puppy. Check the packaging for recommended ages.

Collar

As soon as your puppy gets curious enough not to come back to you when he is outside, off leash, it’s time to consider a collar. A belt collar with a buckle similar to that on a belt is great to hold his tags.

6 Foot Leash

Look for something that is comfortable to hold while being sturdy enough to keep the dog secure. We do NOT recommend retractable leashes!

Treats

Every dog love treats! Treats are a great training tool. We use Red Barn beef or Hungry Howie’s pet food rolls, but any treat your puppy likes will be sufficient. We recommend: Red Barn Beef Rolls, 3 lb. You will need to slice then dice them. It will yield about a gallon bag of treats for under $10. Amazon is where we order from.

Food and Water Bowls

Your puppy is going to be small for a little while, so any small, durable bowls will work. They will try to chew it if they can, so stainless steel is good.
